Since 1984, Suzanne has been intimately involved with Kashmir and its people and has witnessed a Himalayan paradise with a strong and vibrant population brought to its knees. For the past two decades Kashmiris have been forced to cope with a cyclical life of continual conflict, insecurity, and the threat of physical and emotional harm. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is on the rise – a majority of victims are women whose suicide rate is now higher than that of men.

Dr. Arif Ashad and his non-governmental organization, Prevention and Care for Everyone (PACE) in Srinagar, Kashmir, is a critical resource for meeting the post-traumatic stress needs of women, children and families whose houses, he says, “look like haunted places”. Currently, there are approximately 400,000 people with stress disorder, stress diabetes and hypertension, and many more who suffer in other ways from psychological trauma related to violence.

Global Humanitarian Photojournalists is soliciting funds for The Other Martyrs which will help open PTSD medical clinics and counseling centers for marginalized women who have no source of income and desperately need skills training to support their families.

About Suzanne Hayano

Suzanne Hayano entered the field of Visual Anthropology and received a Masters Degree in Social Anthropology at California State University at Northridge while simultaneously working in the Mexican-American community of Los Angeles in the 1970’s. She currently divides her year between California, South Africa and India.

Suzanne studies people; she studies facial character, body language, and different lifestyles as reflective of the influences of environment and culture. Her first published photographs were of the Nicaraguan Sandinista revolutionary leaders; and, staying in the Americas, she subsequently spent 10 years (1970-1980) researching and documenting village economics in the Peruvian Amazon and traditional textiles in the Peruvian and Bolivian Andes.

Since 1984, Suzanne has been intimately involved with Kashmir and it’s people. She has been witness to the political nightmarish decade of ‘the terrible ’90s’ and the most recent human rights abuses of this 21st century as the Kashmiris have attempted to (re)define their political affiliation with the government of India. She says, “It is now the time to tell the grassroots, intimate story of the conflict’s effects on the Kashmiri family structure and the psychological impact on it’s members – especially the women as they deal with the aftermath of loss and insecurity which often manifests itself in severe post-traumatic stress syndrome”.

In 2007, Suzanne published IN FULL-FRAME, PORTRAITS OF GUJARAT, a photography book with 140 of her color photographs. In Dharamsala, India in May of 2008, she was the Staff Photographer for the Tibetan Olympics.

“Hope through the training of the victim Congo civil war”
By Jacob Foko

The Flux Mothers is a film that focuses on the remarkable project being carried out by Emergency Africa in Brazzaville, Congo. The organization, founded by Dr. Anne Tefaro, helps women and children victims of the devastating 1997-2000 Congo civil war gain self sufficiency through job training, education, and healthcare. During his two months journey there in 2008, visual journalist Jacob Foko documented the lives and hopes of these young mothers and children who were once victims of rape and abuse.

“The Flux Mothers” documents the work of Dr. Anne Tefaro, founder of URGENCE D’AFRIQUE (EMERGENCY AFRICA) in Brazzaville, Congo. The organization focuses on helping women and children victims of the Congo civil war gain self sufficiency through job training, education, and healthcare. Since many program participants are victims of rape, Dr. Tefaro also provides self-empowerment classes such as Aikido. Though Dr. Tafaro has had much success with her organization, there are still many areas where the program needs help. Financial support is needed in order to complete the following:

Invest in safety equipment for working women
Purchase medical equipment and supplies for medical center
Provide adequate housing and transportation for all participants

It is the hope of Dr. Tafaro to further develop the job-training program so it will become self-sustaining and eventually bring in income for the women, their families, and the program. To achieve this, EMERGENCY AFRICA needs safety equipment so it’s women can work without danger. Dr. Tefaro also needs medical supplies and equipment to keep the program’s medical center running and the participants healthy. Another goal is to provide safe and clean housing for all participants, many of whom are currently living in substandard housing which presents health hazards to both the women and their children.

If you are interested in helping GLOBAL HUMANITARIAN PHOTOJOURNALISTS (GHP) find solutions to assist Dr. Tafaro’s organization, please make a donation to GHP or contact us directly.

“Bringing Essential Dental Care to Afghanistan”
By Brenda Manookin and John Waskey

Afghanistan Dental Relief Project (ADRP) is a non-profit organization under the direction of Dr. James Rolfe, DDS. His Program provides free dental care to impovrished Afghan citizens through a clinic he established in the city of Kabul. Oral health is a sever problem in Afghanistan, and each year many die of infections caused by abscessed teeth. In a country where there is one dentist for every 250,000 people, ADRP is hoping to expand its efforts into other Afghan provinces to change that number.

AFGHANISTAN DENTAL RELIEF PROJECT Requests your assistance in establishing the first dental technical training school in their country, where dental care has been virtually unavailable for thirty years. Orphans and widows will be trained as assistants, hygienists, and laboratory technicians. The project has been approved by the Afghan Government, and land has been secured. The finished, self-contained facility with fifteen operatories of equipment is ready to ship now. How can you help?

Donate surgical and operative instruments and cavitrons
Help with shipping expenses by contributing funds
Provide disposable items, supplies, and small equipment
Consider volunteering

Global Humanitrarian Photojournalists is soliciting funds for the “Afghanistan Dental Relief Project” which will help in establishing a school where orphans, widows and victims of war can learn to be dental assistants, hygienists, clinical and lab workers.

If you are interested in helping GHP find solutions to assist the Afghanistan Dental Relief Project, please, make a donation and or contact us directly.
